Abstract

This paper explores the consequences that European common market had on the economy of the Southern Italy. The issue allowed us to understand if the creation of European economic community was driven by the genuine desire to build, over time, a political community – which has among its objectives the harmonious growth of all its regions – or whether it was immediately penalized by the protection of specific national economic interests. On the one hand, the ECM contributed to the Italian “economic miracle”. But on the other hand, the participation in the ECM had a different impact on the economies of the Northern and Southern Italy, exacerbating the internal dualism of the country and increasing the development gap between Southern Italy and the regions of continental Europe.
