Holy Year 1925: between pilgrimage and tourism

Abstract

Questo lavoro si propone di ricostruire il legame che si è creato tra il pellegrinaggio, il viaggio, il turismo e le motivazioni che hanno spinto due personaggi diversi come il duce e papa Pio XI ad attuare il riavvicinamento tra lo Stato italiano e il Vaticano, le cui relazioni si erano bruscamente interrotte nel 1870. In particolare, nel giubileo del '25, istituito da Pio XI, l'organizzazione e le infrastrutture di accoglienza iniziano a prendere una piega diversa, che unifica la figura del pellegrino con quella del turista.

This work aims to reconstruct the link that has been created between the pilgrimage, travel, tourism and the motivations that drove two different characters such as the duce and Pope Pius XI to implement the rapprochement between the Italian State and the Vatican, whose relations had broken down abruptly in 1870. In particular, in the jubilee of ’25, instituted by Pius XI, the organization and reception infrastructure begin to take a different turn, which unifies the figure of the pilgrim with that of the tourist.
