Abstract

Middle-European culture clearly shows that Europe cannot be reduced to a mere economic system, but is primarily a composite of different cultural heritages, each one of which can express values shared by all, and accordingly is capable of collaborating on communal institutional projects. This capacity has virtually nothing to do with economics, but instead is based on ideas derived from humanistic thinking, which the tradition of law has over the centuries transformed into institutional forms and practice. It follows that the idea of Mitteleuropa has largely forsaken the legendary image imposed upon it by literature, and can now be considered as an example of a legally structured, multiply interactive system of prime importance in understanding the complex nature of the present and in determining future aspirations.
