The expectation of Europe

Abstract

With the ratification of the Treaty of Paris, the dreams of European unity became a reality. Supranational institutions were created, as well as a legal community harmonising the legislations of the member States. However, can we say that the European political community really exists? Doesn’t a political community also require the existence of shared cultural representations creating the feeling of belonging? In this text, the status of Europe is enquired in order to think about the possibility of a European narrative assembling together the different and often rival European national identities in one single community of common destiny.
