German hegemony and the images of the Reich

Abstract

The widespread anti-Europeanism disapproves the influence of the Union on the economy of different countries. The EU is based on economic roots and ordinary people feel the common currency as the only real presence in their lives. The introduction of Euro had favorable outlooks but now it is seen as a failure. The primary criticism is about German hegemony on European economic and monetary policy, and its reluctance to develop a clear political project for all the Member States. Therefore the issue of Reich and Bismarck Renaissance in all their different permutations is brought back to highlight the links between Germany and Imperial heritage, Germany and Europe. It seems that the idea of nation must be rethought also by pro-Europeans.
