Abstract

In this work, populism is examined as a specific form that takes the protest in the historical phases in which there is a combination of economic crisis and representation crisis. Specifically, starting from the analysis of the European integration model, we will theoretically examine populism in Europe as a symptom of the crisis of the democratic system and as a counter-excessive effect of an original excess produced by technocratic liberalism in the specific forms assumed within the European framework. The European socio-economic and institutional model is described in this work as a mix between two traditions of thought that characterize European governance: the Ordoliberal model and the Austro-American school. The distortions and crises that this model produces in the various countries of the eurozone are crucial for understanding populist success.
