Mirror games. Notes on the representations of the stranger in European culture

Abstract

Questo saggio - senza pretese di esaustività e con il supporto di un'ampia letteratura - si propone di discutere le rappresentazioni dello straniero nella cultura europea. Partendo dalla premessa che le figure linguistiche tendono a ripetersi nella storia e ad applicarsi a diverse relazioni socio-politiche, la ricostruzione critica prenderà in considerazione diversi stereotipi e formule che nel corso del tempo hanno subito significativi "spostamenti di significato".

This essay – without claiming to be exhaustive and with the support of a broad literature – aims to discuss the representations of the stranger in the European culture. Starting from the premise that linguistic figures tend to repeat themselves in history and to apply to different socio-political relationships, the critical reconstruction will take into account different stereotypes and formulas which over the course of time have seen significant “shifts in meaning”.
