America and Europe: search for a new partnership between divergences and convergences

Abstract

For decades Europe and America, in spite of many contrasts between them, developed a community of values and ideals related to the adoption of the advanced model of the Western democracy. A community of purposes still exists and it is reflected in the continuity of the NATO, with the different roles of its members. The Euro-American partnership is still of paramount importance to cope with a complex set of global challenges to the political and economic security and it is the most integrated in the world, reaching about half of the gross national product and 40% of world trade. Numerous and recent studies, reports and researches - especially in the frame of the "Transatlantic Trends" and "Transworld" projects - highlight differences and similarities in the Euro-American relationship. Great opportunities await Europe and America such as the completion of the Agreement for the creation of a large free trade area.
