Abstract

Less centrality is assigned to Europe within the current geopolitical context. This is due to both the weakening of the process of unification and to the crisis of the historical, cultural and social identity model as we knew it so far. While this is seemingly the result of counteractions enacted at national level in order to preserve cultural diversity, plurality and differences could be favored by means of larger identity assemblages, such as the Mediterranean region and its cultural pluralism. At the crossroad of cultures but also as an entrenchment of traditions dependent one another, the Mediterranean region represents a space of diversity and cohabitation. Both symbolically and geographically, the Mediterranean means peaceful coexistence, diversity and openness to dialogue. It counteracts forms of extremism and rather promotes peace, tolerance and inclusion.
