Abstract

The idea of a “Europe of Region” became popular during the ‘80s and early ‘90s, when Europe's future seemed to lie with a loose, decentralised federation of regions. After few years, however, the idea of a “Europe of Regions” fell out of favour and the regions themselves got stuck into decisional limitations. As a consequence, their own role in the eu has been neglected, despite the fact that their activism in Brussels has never ceased. The paper intends to make a critical overview of this institutional alternative, its development, the reasons why it has been abandoned and how it made a comeback in the form of the “multi-level governance”.
