Conflicting values. Where does Europe want to go?

Abstract

The criticism of the European Union has many facets, but one of the most serious undoubtedly concerns its neoliberal orientation which leads to fundamental conflicts with democratic values. The aim of this paper is to trace the development of the current situation and to show why democracy is not a neutral political system which is compatible with any kind of economy. If the European Union doesn’t want to abandon its enlightenment legacy it sooner or later will have to change its policy right as it is grounded on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
