Abstract

L'obiettivo di questo saggio è illustrare i caratteri principali dell'europeismo di Giulio Bergmann. Attingere alle idee del senatore del Partito Repubblicano Italiano (Pri) significa addentrarsi nella tradizione repubblicana - in particolare, nel continuo riferimento alle figure di Mazzini e Cattaneo - e guardare, attraverso gli occhi di un protagonista, alle radici dell'edificio istituzionale europeo. L'impegno di Bergmann, tra Roma e Strasburgo, ha guardato alla necessità di fondare un'Europa libera, federale e progressista per contrastare le macerie della Seconda guerra mondiale e, per l'Italia, la problematica eredità del fascismo.

The aim of this essay is to illustrate the main characters of Giulio Bergmann’s Europeanism. Drawing on the ideas of the senator of the Italian Republican Party (Pri), it means going into the republican tradition – in particular, in the continuous reference to the figures of Mazzini and Cattaneo – and looking, through the eyes of a protagonist, at the roots of the European institutional building. Bergmann's commitment, between Rome and Strasbourg, looked at the need to found a free, federal and progressive Europe to counter the rubbles of the Second World War and, for Italy, the problematic legacy of fascism.
