Alain and the Europe of Man

Abstract

L'Europa di Alain non era l'Europa delle nazioni, ma l'Europa degli uomini che vivevano in quelle nazioni. Cresciuto alla scuola di Jules Lagneau, fin dall'adolescenza iniziò ad apprezzare il valore della persona umana e l'importanza del suo giudizio (jugement) come capacità di pensare liberamente, solo seguendo la guida della sua ragione. In questo modo - per Alain -, le passioni, cioè i soli e unici impedimenti alla realizzazione di una vita il più possibile serena, venivano distrutte. Pacifista e democratico, Alain partecipò alla Prima Guerra Mondiale per dovere verso la patria, ma profondamente convinto dell'inutilità della guerra e, da quell'esperienza, si rafforzò in lui la convinzione che la pace potesse essere raggiunta solo dalla volontà dell'uomo. Pertanto, l'economia, il diritto, la politica, le istituzioni comunitarie avevano senso solo se prodotte da un libero giudizio dell'uomo, dal suo desiderio di creare una fratellanza capace di superare gli angusti confini di una nazione e in grado di espandersi in tutta Europa e oltre.

Alain’s Europe was not the Europe of nations but the Europe of the men who lived in those nations. Brought up in the school of Jules Lagneau, since adolescence he began to appreciate the value of the human person and the importance of his judgment (jugement) as the ability to think freely, only by following the guidance of his reason. In this way – for Alain –, passions, namely the sole and unique impediments to the realization of a life as serene as possible, were destroyed. A pacifist and democratic, Alain participated in the First World War for duty to the country, but deeply convinced of the futility of war and, from that experience, it was reinforced in him the belief that peace could be achieved only by the will of man. Therefore, economy, law, politics, communitarian institutions were meaningful only if produced by a free judgment of man, by his desire to create a brotherhood capable of overcoming the narrow confines of a nation and able to expand throughout Europe and beyond.
