Europe between East and West and its Medium Axis

Abstract

Oriente e Occidente non sono solo due entità geografiche e storiche, ma anche due categorie spirituali: la terra della spiritualità e la terra della razionalità e della materia. Il documento è una riflessione su dove e come l'Europa possa recuperare la sua centralità culturale e politica tra Occidente e Oriente. L'unicità del patrimonio europeo di universalismo pluralistico può aiutare a riorientare un Occidente disorientato. Per questo l'Europa deve trovare il suo equilibrio rafforzando la relazione complementare tra le due coordinate geo-culturali storiche che segnano il suo Asse Medio: la Mitteleuropa e l'area mediterranea.

Orient and Occident are not only two geographical and historical entities, but also two spiritual categories: the land of spirituality, and the land of rationality and matter. The paper is a reflection on where and how Europe can restore its cultural and political centrality between the Occident and the Orient. The uniqueness of Europe’s heritage of pluralistic universalism can help to reorientate a disoriented Occident. For this reason Europe has to find its equilibrium by reinforcing the complementary relationship between the two historical geo-cultural coordinates that mark its Medium Axis: Mitteleuropa and the Mediterranean area.
