Per un’Europa più autonoma e sicura. Il rilancio della UEO a Roma nel 1984 e il ruolo dell’Italia
For a more autonomous and secure Europe. The relaunch of the WEU in Rome in 1984 and the role of Italy
Parole chiave:Western European Union, Italy, European integration, European security and defence, NATO
This essay aims to analyse the attempted revival of the Western European Union (WEU) in the 1980s. In particular, the study focuses on lesser-known elements of the Italian commitment in this direction, and especially on the 1984 Rome process. Set within the broader issue of European security, in a complex phase of bipolarity, the re-launch of the WEU placed at the centre many of the fundamental issues of both the European integration process and relations with NATO.
