This essay aims to analyse the attempted revival of the Western European Union (WEU) in the 1980s. In particular, the study focuses on lesser-known elements of the Italian commitment in this direction, and especially on the 1984 Rome process. Set within the broader issue of European security, in a complex phase of bipolarity, the re-launch of the WEU placed at the centre many of the fundamental issues of both the European integration process and relations with NATO.
